What are Dental Crowns and Tooth Bridges?
Dental crowns and tooth bridges are used to replace missing teeth which are lost due to dental conditions such as chipped or cracked teeth. Dental crown and bridges are a “fixed” solution as they are cemented in the mouth and are not removable, unlike dentures, which can be taken in and out of the mouth.
What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are sometimes used to cover or cap damaged teeth. Not only do they serve to strengthen the damaged tooth or teeth, dental crowns also assist in maintaining a natural, healthy appearance. Dental crowns may be used in combination with dental implants, to provide a tooth that is more natural looking in shape and size.
To best match the natural look and color of teeth, dental crowns are commonly made from porcelain or ceramic materials. Dental crowns can be created out of acrylic or metal alloys, such as gold. While metal is strong, it is not as esthetically pleasing, so this material is often reserved for use on back teeth. If strength is a concern, metal may be used as the base and combined with ceramic or porcelain on front teeth to maintain esthetics and match the patients natural tooth color.
What are Bridges?
If a tooth is lost and has teeth present on either side, a tooth bridge may be an excellent options. It is important to recognize a need for restoring spaces, even if they do not seem large or problematic. Gaps can cause other teeth to rotate or shift into the empty space, potentially creating far bigger problems with the teeth and jaws. Bridges are an excellent option to correct gaps between teeth. Tooth bridges may also prevent problems with the gums and TMJ, which can develop as a result of missing teeth.
Bridges function simply by filling in the gap or space left by missing teeth. They are commonly affixed to adjacent teeth or implants, using cement to create a permanent bridge. This method allows the teeth to be restored to a more natural, healthy state. The solution is very strong and, with proper hygiene, may last many years. Like dental crowns, bridges can be created using various materials such as porcelain or gold depending on the location of the bridge and the wishes of the patient.
